LONDON -- Anthony Joshua has revealed Peter Fury has been offering him some advice ahead of his upcoming fight against Tyson Fury, Peter's nephew.
Joshua and Tyson will go head-to-head on Dec. 11 in Cardiff and faced off for the first time at a news conference on Wednesday.
The fight, which has been 10 years in the making, now has an added layer of narrative with the peripheral involvement of Peter Fury and Fury's former trainer, Ben Davison, who attended the news conference.
Joshua told reporters, including ESPN, on Wednesday, that he will be training with Davison and often talks with Peter Fury, who is also a high-level coach. "I speak to Peter Fury. He's willing to help me as well [as Davison]," Joshua said.
Asked if Peter had given him some good ideas ahead of the fight, Joshua said: "Yeah, but not about Fury ... About our training and our approach. How I can approach the fight.
"It's not: 'Oh, Fury does this.' It was more like: 'I've seen what you do and this is where he thinks he can improve.
"It goes back to that saying. Everybody wants me to win. Everybody's going to tell me how to win. But the most important person to listen to is myself at this point in my career.
"So, I'm going to take everything with a pinch of salt. But what I was saying is ... It wasn't so much going to Ben and Peter because they have worked with Fury before. The reason why I went with Ben is because they pinpoint things."
After a stint training with Oleksandr Usyk's team in Spain ahead of his fight against Kristian Prenga in July, Davison has returned as Joshua's predominant trainer.
The pair worked together for Joshua's fights against Otto Wallin, Francis Ngannou and Daniel Dubois. But, Joshua said rather than a normal coach-fighter relationship, Davison will simply add to what he has already been doing.
"I'm at a stage in my life now where everybody better shut up and listen to me when it comes to boxing because I've learned more than most people and most coaches now," Joshua said.
"When I sat back and I observed this, I realised Ben Davison will be a big addition to this fight with what he can add, not control, but what he can add to helping me beat Tyson Fury. "They're very good at pinpointing certain things leading up to a fight that I can execute and exploit during the fight."
Fury, who spoke to media before Joshua and didn't mention his uncle's relationship with Joshua, said he was not phased by Davison's involvement.
"Don't forget I left Ben Davison to go with Sugar Hill because he wasn't good enough and this is the same Ben Davison who Anthony Joshua left because he wasn't good enough," Fury said.
"When he got knocked out off the Dubois it was the same Ben Davison who everyone said: 'Oh, he's this, he's that, he's this, he's that' ... And now they're going back to him."
